Description
  • In this “Great Bulla,” Pope Innocent IV grants a privilege to the "monasterium sancte Caterine de Cingulo" (monastery of Santa Caterina di Cingoli) in Macerata (Marche, Italy) in perpetuity. The exact date on which this bulla was issued is not legible. The Privilege was given at Lyon, France during the seventh year of Innocent IV’s pontificate (which began in June of 1243). While this document could have been produced in 1249 or 1250 depending on the month, it must have been produced by May 27, 1250 when one of the signatories (Rainier, Cardinal Deacon of Santa Maria) is recorded as having died. For a detailed guide to this document, see Gura, David, Vestigia Vaticana.
Provenance
  • Originally included in a 19th century collection of ^Papal Signatures^ gifted to #Saint Mary's College# in the early- to mid-twentieth century by an unrecorded individual. This papal bull has been removed from the volume (call number: qBX850 C36). Once part of a two-volume set; the second volume is held by the University of Notre Dame. The University of Notre Dame conserved this papal bull and displayed it as a part of an exhibit during the conference, The Promise of the Vatican Library, held May 8-10, 2016 at the University of Notre Dame. David Gura, Curator of Ancient and Medieval Manuscripts at the Hesburgh LibraryREGEX oversaw this conservation.
